UPS
Batteries The battery can
be seen as the ‘heart’ of the system, it is often the
most expensive item with absolute reliability demanded. CPS believe
that just as much consideration should be given to the battery as
the UPS itself. Batteries can be split into two types, ‘Open-vented’
and Sealed/Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA). Generally, the VRLA types
are the battery choice for modern UPS systems as they require low
routine maintenance, are environmentally friendly and are usually
a more cost effective solution.
Battery quality can be determined by the ‘design life’,
typically between 8-12 years for VRLA batteries. The ‘design
life’ is not and never will be a guaranteed life expectancy
and relies on several factors including environment, temperature,
maintenance, number of discharge cycles, charging regime etc.
Battery
& UPS Disposal Constant Power Services Ltd
are experienced in the replacement and disposal of UPS and batteries
in accordance with the ‘Special Waste Regulations 1996’.
CPS hold a waste carrier license and only use approved
waste disposal agents. All our batteries are ‘non-hazardous
valve regulated sealed lead acid’. Battery
Housing Integral
Our UPS range offers the option of integral battery accommodation
up to and including the 30kVA UPS module. Both the Starlet M &
Vega can accommodate batteries in the bottom half of the enclosure
and the Planet a single battery string on the right hand side of the
UPS enclosure.
Open Racks(Drawing)
Free
standing structures, complete with acid resistant adjustable feet
with anti-shock options for offshore or unpredictable environments
and anti-seismic options for areas of geological unpredictability
or sites such as nuclear power stations. All units designed to provide
optimum access for installation and maintenance for the respective
battery block type. Provides flexible designs to optimise plant room
space and structural limitations.
Cladded Racks(Drawing)
Enclosed structures designed to provide
a cost effective alternative to battery cubicles. Based on open rack
type with surrounding panels and raised cover. Provides features such
as required venting, matching of BS4800 and RAL colour schemes and
the ability to fulfil specific requirements such as IP ratings. Provides
flexible designs to optimise plant room space and structural limitations. External
Maintenance Bypass Panel The provision of an External Manual
Bypass Switch (MBS) gives the ability to fully isolate the UPS enabling
maintenance, upgrades or system removal without disturbance to the
load. The switchgear meets the electrical regulations for local isolation
and allows all AC cabling to be completed even before the UPS is delivered
to site. This enables delivery, switchover and commissioning to be
performed on a clean site during normal working hours, thereby keeping
costs to a minimum and reducing the risk of exposing the UPS to building
debris and dust by being installed too early.

Isolation
Transformers An Isolation
transformer, housed in a separate floor standing sheet steel ventilated
enclosure, provides the opportunity to earth the UPS output neutral
thereby eliminating the potentially dangerous effects of four pole
switching upstream of the UPS. This unit can also be used to feed
the input of a transformer-less UPS system to accommodate two separate
feeds from different sources. Active
Filtering
(Vega UPS option only) The Vega UPS range can be equipped
with an Active Filter to provide a very low input harmonic distortion
(THDi) of less than 5% and an input power factor of 0.99 to dramitically
reduce running costs and meet the more demanding specifications. This
option is fitted integrally, therfore has no effect on dimensions
and only increases weight by approx 5kgs. Active
Standby Mode for
Emergency Lighting All our UPS systems
can be configured to operate in 'active standby' mode. This term means
the bypass would supply the load during normal conditions and when
a mains failure occurs contactors are used to transfer to inverter
with the standby batteries then supporting the load (typically for
1 hour or 3 hours depending on application). This type of product
is generally used in emergency lighting applications, offering efficient
backup with reduced running costs, although provides no filtering
or protection for more sensitive loads such as computer equipment.
This type of operation is a simple configuration on the Vega, Starlet
M and Sirius products, howeveron the Plant and Hyperion range this
is a factory fitted option.
Top
Entry Cable Chambers(factory fitted option) Units from 100kVA can be supplied with
an optional chamber to allow easy access for top entry cabling. These
matching sections incorporate an aluminium gland plate as standard,
however they can also be supplied with copper busbar connections for
the rectifier, battery, bypass input and UPS output.
Steel
Plinths Fabricated steel stuctures can be manufactured
to support your UPS and batteries up to a raised floor level or to
simply enable bottom cable entry on larger UPS installations. Gland
plates and angles to support floor tiles can also be incorporated
into design as well as adjustable feet or shims. Please note our plinths
are designed and manufactured to suit equipment and specific site
requirements. Temperature
Compensated Charger Typically
for areas where fluctuations in the ambient temperature common and
the risk of exposing sensitive battery installations to high temperatures
is a possibility. CPS can minimise the effects of this problem by
incorporating temperature sensing and specialised control circuitry
in the UPS module to automatically adjust the battery float voltage,
thereby eliminating the chance of plate distortion or gassing often
associated with high temperatures.
Remote
Monitoring A range
of wall mounted remote panels are available as well as network and
environmental options allowing web-browser monitoring, emails, SMS
and safe unattended server shutdown. More details are available on
our remote
panel and network
monitoring pages Fan
Failure alarm(factory
fitted option) Units
from 100kVA can be fitted with a device for monitoring the operation
of each individual fan. In the event of a fault, an alarm shows on
the front panel of the system via relay contacts and software.
Parallel
Operation PCB For
additional capacity or increased system integrity it is possible to
utilize a simple ‘plug and play’ paralleling card which
allows easy adaptation from a single module to a parallel module,
typically available up to 6 units.
UPS
Group Synchroniser (UGS)
(Sirius & Sirius P UPS only)
Our Sirius and Sirius P UPS ranges can be used
with a UGS control system that ensures multiple UPS modules provide
a synchronised output in all conditions. System incorporates a UPS
interafce slot card and a wall mounted control panel.
